History

Jalore, formerly Jabalipura, honors its origins linked to Hindu sage Jabali. Recognized also as Suvarngiri or Songir, housing the imposing fort atop the Golden Mount, it thrived in the 8th century. Historical accounts suggest a Pratihara empire branch governed Jablipur (Jalore) in the 8th-9th centuries. Notably, Uddyotana-sūri crafted Kuvalaya-mālā at Jabalipura in 779 CE, under Gurjara-Pratihara King Vatsaraja’s reign. This heritage-rich town’s evolution and significance reflect a glorious past, echoing through its ancient monikers and the historical legacy ingrained within the walls of its enduring fort.

As per the 2011 census, Jalore district boasts a population akin to Kosovo or Nebraska, totaling 1,828,730 residents. It ranks 260th in India, with a population density of 172 people per square kilometre. Notably, a growth rate of 26.31% was recorded from 2001-2011. Jalor exhibits a sex ratio of 951 females per 1000 males and a 55.58% literacy rate, with only 8.30% residing in urban areas. Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes account for 19.53% and 9.77% of the populace, respectively.
