About Jamtara District

Jamtara is a city and a notified area in the Jamtara Sadar subdivision of the Jamtara district in the Indian state of Jharkhand. It is the headquarters of the eponymous district, subdivision and community development block. It is also nicknamed the phishing capital of India. It got this title because there were numerous incidents of phishing across the country whose centre point was there.In the span of two years between April 2015 and March 2017, police from 12 Indian states reportedly made 23 journeys to Jamtara. They did so to investigate cybercrimes — primarily phishing that were emanating from one of the most underdeveloped districts, was responsible for 8 percent of them by some estimates. 

History

Jamtara, a district in Jharkhand, India, has a rich historical heritage dating back to ancient times. It was once a part of the powerful Magadh Empire, and its name is believed to be derived from “Jambudweep” mentioned in ancient texts. During the British colonial era, Jamtara was a center for tribal uprisings against British rule. After India gained independence in 1947, it became part of Bihar and later Jharkhand in 2000. Today, Jamtara is known for its scenic beauty, diverse culture, and a blend of tribal and modern lifestyles, making it an intriguing destination for history enthusiasts and travelers alike.

In the 2011 India census, Jamtara housed 29,415 residents, comprising 89% Hindus and 10% Muslims, with males accounting for 52% and females 48%. Its literacy rate stood at 63.73%, below the national average (74.4%); male literacy reached 76.85%, while female literacy was 50.08%. Around 13% of the population was under 6 years old. Language diversity in Jamtara was notable, with Bengali dominating at 43.22%, followed by Hindi (28.60%), Khortha (15.48%), and Santali (3.53%). Bengali claimed the most speakers (12,713), trailed by Hindi (8,412), Khortha (4,553), and Santali (1,038) as per the 2011 census.

Jamtara, situated at 23.95°N 86.8°E with an elevation averaging 155 meters (508 feet), spans 1801 km². Positioned 250 km from Ranchi and 54 km from Dhanbad, known as the ‘Coal Capital,’ it’s also 260 km from Kolkata and 290 km from Patna. Established on 26 April 2001, this Jharkhand district comprises merely four blocks, separated from Dumka District. Noteworthy towns include Karmatar, Nala, Kundahit, Narayanpur, Fatehpur, and Mihijam. The district is graced by the Ajay River and is predominantly forested, embodying a serene expanse amid its modest geographical confines.
