About Jaunpur

Jaunpur, a storied city and once the seat of power for the Sharqi dynasty in medieval India, rests gracefully on the Gomti River’s northern banks, a mere 58 kilometers from Varanasi and 100 kilometers from Prayagraj. Between 1394 and 1479, the Jaunpur Sultanate thrived as a sovereign entity in northern India, encompassing present-day Uttar Pradesh under the reign of Sharqi monarchs. This historical realm anchored the roots of Awadhi as its predominant language, marking Jaunpur as a testament to India’s rich cultural heritage and the vibrant tapestry of its bygone kingdoms.

History

Jaunpur’s history, shrouded in legend, hints at its past glory as Devanagari, famed for culture and learning. Kannauj’s ruler conquered it, renaming it Yavanpur. Later, Firoz Shah Tughlaq honored his cousin, Jauna Khan, renaming it Jaunpur in the 13th century. Malik Sarwar, establishing the Sharqi Empire around 1394, fostered art and culture. Mosques, tombs, and schools flourished, marking Jaunpur as a hub of Muslim heritage. Today, echoes of its vibrant past resonate through ornate structures, while it thrives as a hub for jasmine oil, tobacco, Imarti, and sweetmeats, embodying a rich historical tapestry.

Demography

In 2011, Jaunpur NPP’s population totaled 180,362, with 93,718 males and 86,644 females, yielding a sex ratio of 1024 females per 1000 males. The child populace (0–6 years) stood at 22,710. Among them, 128,050 were literate, constituting 71% of the population, with male literacy at 75.2% and female at 66.5%. The effective literacy for 7+ age group was 81.2%, with male literacy at 86.1% and female at 75.9%. Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes numbered 12,703 and 195 respectively among 26,216 households in 2011.

Geography

Jaunpur district lies in Varanasi division’s northwest, spanning between 24.240N to 26.120N latitude and 82.70E to 83.50E longitude. It is graced by the Gomati and Sai rivers, along with smaller ones like Varun, Pili, and Mayur. The land boasts mainly sandy, loamy soils. Despite its scenic beauty, Jaunpur contends with recurring flood disasters. Mineral scarcity characterizes the region, covering an area of 4038 km².
 

Economy

Established under the U.P. Industrial Area Development Act, 1976, GSG, GS Green Enterprise Katehari-Leduka Jaunpur, founded in March 2017, focuses on industrial development in eastern Uttar Pradesh. The initiative kickstarted with a 10-acre fully developed growth center. Hawkins Cookers Limited operates a manufacturing plant in Jaunpur. Similarly, the Satharia Industrial Development Authority, launched in November 1989, concentrates on the area’s industrial growth. Another entity, Sidhwan-Rampur Industrial Development Authority, is establishing its base on a 508-acre growth center. These entities provide comprehensive infrastructural facilities like medical, educational, residential, and industrial necessities. Under the UP Govt.’s ODOP Scheme 2018, Jaunpur district prioritizes perfume and carpet industries.
