Jhalawar, founded by Rajput Jhala Zalim Singh in 1791 A.D. during his tenure as Dewan of Kota State, originated as Chaoni Umedpura, a cantonment amid dense forests. Enamored by the area during hunting excursions, Singh envisioned its development. The township’s genesis as a military cantonment aimed to safeguard against Maratha invaders traversing from Malwa to Kota for Hadoti states’ capture. His fondness for the locale propelled its transformation into a burgeoning township. This historical genesis intertwines the city’s roots with Singh’s vision, marking Jhalawar’s evolution from wilderness to a thriving urban center, embodying a past resonating within its vibrant present.

According to the 2011 Indian Census, Jhalawar housed 66,919 individuals, comprising 34,765 males and 32,154 females. The population aged 0 to 6 years stood at 8,919. Among them, 48,145 were literate, accounting for 71.95% of the populace, with male literacy at 77.9% and female literacy at 65.5%. The overall literacy rate for those aged 7 and above was 83.0%, with male and female rates at 90.1% and 75.4%, respectively. Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes populations were 11,422 and 3,534.
