History

In 1459, the city of Jodhpur was established by Rao Jodha, a prominent Rajput leader of the Rathore clan. Rao Jodha’s remarkable military campaigns resulted in the annexation of surrounding territories from the Delhi Sultanate, leading to the establishment of the Marwar kingdom. Initially, the nearby town of Mandore served as the capital, given Jodha’s origins, but Jodhpur swiftly assumed this pivotal role, even during his lifetime. Positioned strategically along the route connecting Delhi to Gujarat, Jodhpur played a vital role in trade and politics, solidifying its significance as a historical and cultural hub in the heart of Rajasthan.

Demography

According to the provisional findings of the Census of India in 2011, Jodhpur recorded a population of 1,033,918. This demographic makeup consisted of around 52.62% males and approximately 47.38% females. Impressively, the city exhibited an average literacy rate of 80.56 percent, with males boasting a higher rate at about 88.42 percent and females at 73.93 percent. A noteworthy observation is that approximately 12.24 percent of Jodhpur’s population falls under the age of six. Jodhpur’s municipal affairs are managed by a Municipal Corporation, an integral part of the Jodhpur Urban Agglomeration, signifying its role as a key administrative and demographic center in the region.

Geography

Jodhpur experiences a hot arid climate (Köppen BWh), verging on a hot semi-arid climate (Köppen BSh) due to its high potential evapotranspiration. While the city receives an average annual rainfall of approximately 362 mm (14.3 in), primarily occurring between June and September, precipitation levels vary significantly. In drought-ridden 1899, Jodhpur received a mere 24 mm (0.94 in) of rainfall, while the flood year of 1917 brought an astonishing 1,178 mm (46.4 in). The Jojari River, a Luni River tributary, flows through Jodhpur Urban Area, and a 35 km riverfront project is underway as part of the Nammi Ganga Project, overseen by the Ministry of Jal Shakti since January 2021, formerly under the Jodhpur Development Authority. The Jodhpur Pin Code is 342001, falling under the Jodhpur postal division (Jodhpur Region).
