History

In 1207, Raja Kanh Deo, a member of the Kanhpuriya clan of Rajputs, founded the city of Kanhpur and declared it as his capital, eventually evolving into Kanpur. Over the years, Kanpur witnessed diverse rulers, including Harsha Vardhan, Jai Chand, and Mihir Bhoja of Kannauj, as well as Muslim rulers from the Sur dynasty. In 1765, the British defeated Nawab Shuja-ud-daula of Awadh near Jajmau. Kanpur was part of the Oudh Kingdom from 1773 to 1801. Following the 1801 treaty between Nawab Saadat Ali Khan of Awadh and the British, European entrepreneurs recognized its strategic value and established themselves in Kanpur.
