History

The region now known as Kanniyakumari district was once a part of the ancient Ay kingdom during the first and second Sangam periods. Subsequently, following the decline of the Ay kingdoms, it transformed into Venad, with its capital, Padmanabhapuram, situated to the North-Northwest of Nagercoil. The abundant wealth of Nanjilnadu attracted various invading rulers, including the Nayaks during Umayamma Rani’s reign, resulting in a turbulent period in Venad’s history. It wasn’t until 1729 CE, when Marthanda Varma ascended the throne, that stability was restored, bringing an end to the prevailing anarchy in the Kanniyakumari region under their rule.

Demography

As per the 2011 census data, Kanniyakumari district recorded a population of 1,870,374 individuals, displaying a favorable sex ratio of 1,019 females for every 1,000 males, significantly surpassing the national average of 929. Among this population, there were 182,350 children under the age of six, comprising 92,835 boys and 89,515 girls. The demographic composition also included 3.97% from Scheduled Castes and 0.39% from Scheduled Tribes, reflecting the district’s diverse social fabric. Geography

Kanniyakumari District in Tamil Nadu is geographically divided into two distinct regions: Edai Nadu and Nanjil Nadu. Edai Nadu encompasses Vilavancode and Kalkulam taluks, characterized by the majestic Western Ghats that stretch across its entirety. In contrast, Nanjil Nadu comprises Thovalai and Agastheeswaram taluks. These two regions are demarcated by the Aralvaimozhy pass, creating a natural boundary. The remarkable Vaezhimalai, also known as Vaezhi Hills, forms the outer boundary of these regions.
