Khandwa district, previously called East Nimar, is located in central India within the state of Madhya Pradesh. The district’s administrative center is Khandwa city, and it encompasses other significant towns such as Mundi, Harsud, Pandhana, and Omkareshwar.

History:

Khandwa district used to be under Maratha rule until 1818 when it became part of the British Raj. Later, it was included in the Central Provinces and Berar region. The western area, now Khargone district, was part of the princely state of Indore. After India gained independence in 1947, the Central Provinces and Berar became Madhya Pradesh. The district was initially called “Nimar District” and later “East Nimar” after merging with Madhya Bharat. Khandwa was known as East Nimar until recently, and Burhanpur District was separated in 2003. Khandwa District is in the Indore Division.

Geography:

The Khandwa District, with a land area of 6,206 square kilometers (2,396 square miles) and a population of 1,310,061 as per the 2011 census, is situated in the Nimar region. This region encompasses the lower valley of several rivers: the Narmada, Kherkhali, Choti Tawa, and Shiva. The Narmada River forms a part of the district’s northern boundary, while the southern boundary is defined by the Satpura Range. To the south of Khandwa lies the Burhanpur District, located in the Tapti River basin. A significant geographical feature is the pass through the Satpura Range that links Khandwa and Burhanpur, an important route connecting northern and southern India. Overseeing this pass is the Asirgarh fortress, often referred to as the “Key to the Deccan.” Neighboring districts include Betul and Harda to the east, Dewas to the north, and Khargone to the west.

In 2006, Khandwa was identified by the Ministry of Panchayati Raj as one of India’s 250 most underdeveloped districts, out of a total of 640. Presently, it is among the 24 districts in Madhya Pradesh that are beneficiaries of financial support from the Backward Regions Grant Fund Programme (BRGF).
