History:

The Kodavas were the first people to live in Kodagu, and they were farmers who had been there for a long time. They were also warriors who used weapons during wars and had their own leaders.

Coorg’s early history can be found in writings from the Sangam period, which dates from 300 BCE to 300 CE. The Ezhimala dynasty ruled over two areas – the coastal Poozhinadu and the hilly eastern Karkanadu. Poozhinadu covered much of the coastal area from Mangalore to Kozhikode. Karkanadu included the Wayanad-Gudalur hilly region and parts of Kodagu (Coorg).

The Haleri dynasty, which was related to the Keladi Nayakas, governed Kodagu from 1600 to 1834. Later, the British ruled Kodagu from 1834, following the Coorg War, until India became independent in 1947. Before that, Kodagu was a separate state known as Coorg State. In 1956, it was merged with the Mysore State (now Karnataka).

Geography:

Kodagu is a district in India situated on the eastern slopes of the Western Ghats. It covers an area of 4,102 square kilometers and is surrounded by other districts like Dakshina Kannada to the northwest, Hassan to the north, Mysore to the east, and districts in Kerala to the west and south.
