About Kollam District

Formerly known as Quilon, or Desinganadu in history, Kollam stands as an ancient coastal marvel on the Malabar Coast of India, adjoining the Laccadive Sea, a part of the Arabian Sea. History

Kollam, once known as the ancient city of Quilon, flourished as a bustling port under the Pandya dynasty (c. 3rd century BC–12th century) and later emerged as the capital of the independent Venad or the Kingdom of Quilon around 825 AD. Its historical significance as one of the pivotal early trade hubs remains unparalleled. During the 13th century, Kollam stood among the prestigious global trade centers, joining the ranks of Alexandria, Cairo, Quanzhou, and Malacca. This prominence persisted well into the Medieval period, evident from the visit of Yuan China’s envoys in 1280, solidifying relations between the local ruler and China, highlighting Kollam’s enduring trade prowess.

Demography

According to the 2011 India census, Kollam city housed 349,033 individuals at a density of 5,400 persons per square kilometre. Notably, it boasted the state’s highest sex ratio at 1,112 females per 1,000 males. The district ranked seventh in population, while the city itself held the fourth position. With an impressive literacy rate of 93.77% in 2010, surpassing the national average, Kollam displayed remarkable educational strides. The city’s expansion, merging with Thrikkadavoor panchayath in May 2015, enlarged its area to 73.03 km2 and its population to 384,892. Malayalam serves as the primary language, supplemented by pockets understanding Tamil. Kollam Municipality operates across six zones, streamlining local governance.

Economically, it stands fifth in India and third in Kerala regarding per capita income and overall economic performance. Renowned for its robust export industry, Kollam boasts a thriving commercial sector featuring 5-star, 4-star, and 3-star hotels, high-rise shopping complexes, branded jewelry and textile showrooms, and automobile dealerships. Embracing the mall culture, it was the third city in Kerala to introduce shopping malls. Notably, Kollam district leads in livestock wealth statewide.
