About Kozhikode District
Kozhikode, also known as Calicut, sits on Kerala’s Malabar Coast. With a city population of 609,224 and a metro of over 2 million, it’s Kerala’s second-largest metro and India’s 19th. Classified as a Tier 2 city, it was the capital of the British-era Malabar district. Renowned as the City of Spices for its historic spice trade, it was once ruled by the Samoothiris. The port served as a gateway for Chinese, Persians, Arabs, and Europeans. In 2009, Indicus Analytics ranked Kozhikode the second-best city to live in India. Notably, in November 2023, UNESCO included Kozhikode in its Creative Cities Network (UCCN), a pioneering achievement for an Indian city.
History
The ancient port Tyndis, referenced in the Periplus of the Erythraean Sea near Kozhikode, sparks debate on its exact location—suggested spots include Ponnani, Tanur, Beypore-Chaliyam-Kadalundi-Vallikkunnu, and Koyilandy. It thrived as a key trade center, next only to Muziris, connecting the Cheras and the Roman Empire. Positioned at the northwestern edge of Keprobotos (Chera dynasty), Tyndis bordered the Ezhimala-ruled North Malabar region during the Sangam period. Limyrike, from Naura to Tyndis, as per the Periplus, likely extended till Kanyakumari, roughly aligning with today’s Malabar Coast. Rome’s annual trade, valued at 50,000,000 sesterces, thrived here, despite piracy, and Cosmas Indicopleustes noted Limyrike as a pepper source.
