Lawngtlai, a significant town nestled within Mizoram’s Lawngtlai district, holds strategic importance as it serves as the administrative hub for the Lai Autonomous District Council. Positioned in the eastern proximity, it shares borders with Saiha District, while its western boundary connects it with Bangladesh. Before the British arrival in the late 19th century, Lawngtlai District was under the governance of local chieftains. These chieftains held authority over small territories, often limited to a single village or a cluster of villages.[1] In 1888, a significant incident unfolded when the chief of Fungkah village led an attack on a British surveying team, resulting in the tragic deaths of four individuals, including Lieutenant Stewart. Responding to this event, the British dispatched a punitive expedition to restore order in the region in the subsequent year. This historical event marked a pivotal moment in the district’s history.

This positions the district at the 611th rank among all Indian districts, totaling 640. In total, Lawngtlai district covers an area of 2557.10 km², as per the 2001 Census.
