Before the British arrival in the late 19th century, Lawngtlai District was under the governance of local chieftains. These chieftains held authority over small territories, often limited to a single village or a cluster of villages.[1] In 1888, a significant incident unfolded when the chief of Fungkah village led an attack on a British surveying team, resulting in the tragic deaths of four individuals, including Lieutenant Stewart. Responding to this event, the British dispatched a punitive expedition to restore order in the region in the subsequent year. This historical event marked a pivotal moment in the district’s history.
