History:

Anand, known as the “Milk Capital of India,” is famous for the Amul dairy revolution led by Tribhuvandas Patel, Verghese Kurien, and H. M. Dalaya. It hosts the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd (GCMMF, AMUL’s parent body), the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), and educational institutions like IRMA, Vidya Dairy, and Anand Agricultural University. The nearby educational suburb Vallabh Vidhyanagar houses institutes like Birla Vishvkarma Mahavidhyalaya, G. H. Patel College of Engineering and Technology, A.D Patel Institute of Technology, and Sardar Patel University, attracting around 50,000 students nationally.

Geography:

Anand, located between Ahmedabad and Vadodara on the Western Railways, is about 101 km from Gandhinagar, the state capital. It serves as a crucial railway junction with a broad gauge line to Godhra, passing through Dakor, a famous Hindu pilgrimage site. This line hosts MEMUs and some passenger trains. Additionally, Anand connects to Khambhat via a branch line, operated by Diesel Multiple Units, as it awaits electrification. The Anand Railway Station has five platforms, with the first four on the main line and the fifth on the Godhra branch line. A new platform is under construction, linking to the Ahmedabad line from Godhra. The city also connects to the Ahmedabad Vadodara Expressway and lies at an elevation of 39 meters, covering 47.89 km².

According to the 2011 India census, Anand’s population was 634,987, with males making up 51.77% and females 48.23%. The city’s average literacy rate was 78.45%, which is higher than the national average of 59.5%. In 2011, male literacy was at 91.82% and female literacy at 76.36%, showing a significant increase from the 2001 census figures of 86.09% for males and 61.94% for females. Additionally, 11% of Anand’s population was under the age of 6. The overall literacy rate in Anand saw an improvement from 74.51% in 2001 to 84.37% in 2011.
