About Araria

Araria is a city that also serves as a municipality. It acts as the central point for the Araria district, Bihar. It is located in the northern region of Bihar.

History:

Araria belongs to the Mithila region. This area became notable when Indo-Aryan people moved in and formed the Mithila Kingdom, also known as the Kingdom of the Videhas.

During ancient times, between 1100 and 500 BCE, the Kingdom of the Videhas rose to prominence in South Asia. The rulers of this kingdom were known as Jankas. Later on, this kingdom became a part of the Vajjika League, which had its main city in Vaishali, also located in the Mithila region.

Geography:

Araria stands at an elevation of 47 meters above sea level. Positioned in the northern part of Bihar, it is nestled between Purnia and Madhepura. The district is bordered by Nepal to the north, Kishanganj to the east, and Supaul to the southwest. It was established from a split of Purnia district on the festive day of Makar Sankranti in 1990. Additionally, Araria is notable for touching the international border with Nepal and for being near three countries: Nepal, Bangladesh, and Bhutan.

The Panaar River plays a significant role in Araria. The river’s banks are fertile grounds for farming, but during the rainy season, the river often floods, causing destruction. Additionally, a canal runs through the area. On clear days, particularly after it rains, you can see the Kangchenjunga mountain range from Araria.

Demographics:

Araria is mostly a countryside area, with 93% of its people living in 713 villages. Out of its nine subdivisions, only two, Forbesganj and Araria, have people living in urban areas, according to the 2001 Census.
