Barpeta Pincodes

Barpeta district is an administrative region in Assam, India, with its headquarters in Barpeta town. Established in 1983, it was originally part of Kamrup district. In 2020, Bajali subdivision became a separate district. The district covers 3,245 km² and had a population of 1,642,420 as of 2001.

Geography

Barpeta District was created by splitting it from Kamrup District in July 1983. It got its name from its headquarters, Barpeta. The district, located in Lower Assam, spans 2,645 square km and is bordered by Baksa District to the north, Bajali District to the east, Kamrup and Goalpara Districts to the south, and Bongaigaon District to the west. Its coordinates are approximately 26.19° North latitude and 91.00° East longitude.

Topography

The district’s topography varies from low-lying plains to highlands with small hillocks in the southwestern part, including Baghbar, Fulora, and Chatala, offering scenic views of the Brahmaputra River.

Climate

Barpeta enjoys a mild and pleasant climate year-round, with two distinct seasons. Summers last from March to May, followed by the monsoon season from June to September, and then the cool winter season from October to February.

Rivers

The Brahmaputra River flows from east to west in the southern part of the district. It is fed by tributaries like Beki, Manah, Pohumara, Kaldia, Palla, Nakhanda, Marachaulkhowa, and Bhelengi, running from north to south. Rivers Pohumara and Kaldia converge near Barpeta town, forming the Nakhanda River, which later joins with Palla and Beki to create the Chaulkhowa River.
