Located in the Bilaspur District in the Indian state of Chhattisgarh, Bilaspur, popularly referred to as “The City of Festivals,” is a city. The administrative centre of the Bilaspur Division and District is located in Bilaspur. The Chhattisgarh High Court is privileged to be known as the State’s Nyayadhani (Law Capital), and it is situated in Bodri, District Bilaspur. The business and commercial core of the northeastern area of Chhattisgarh is this city. Being the home of the South East Central Railway Zone (SECR) and the Bilaspur Railway Division, it is also a significant city for Indian Railways. The South Eastern Coalfields Limited headquarters are located in Bilaspur.

History

Formerly a part of Dakshina Kosala, Bilaspur was close to the capitals of Malhar, Ratanpur (ancient Ratnapura), Sirpur (ancient Shripura), Tuman (ancient Tummana), and Chhattisgarh (ancient Mallar). The Kalachuri dynasty of Ratanpur ruled it starting in the fifth century. Ratanpur served as the capital of the state of Chhattisgarh for numerous dynasties in the past. On the other hand, Bilaspur became well-known in 1741, the year the Maratha Empire was ruled, when a Maratha official settled there to oversee the Ratanpur dynasty.

Geography

The coordinates of Bilaspur are 22.09°N 82.15°E. It is 264 metres (866 feet) above sea level on average. Situated on the banks of the rain-fed Arpa River, which rises in Central India’s Maikal Range, is Bilaspur. This area is rich in dolomite and is bordered to the north by thick forests and to the east by the Hasdeo Valley coal mines. The districts of Koria in the north, Anuppur in Madhya Pradesh, Mungeli and Baloda Bazar-Bhata Para in the south, and Korba and Janjgir-Champa in the east encircle Bilaspur District.

Demography

There were 365,579 people living in Bilaspur Municipal Corp as of the 2011 India census. The estimated population of the Bilaspur urban area was 652,851. The neighbouring eighteen towns and suburban regions became part of the Bilaspur Municipal Corporation in August 2019. 51% of the population is male, while 49% is female. With male literacy at 92.94% and female literacy at 88.33%, Bilaspur has a higher average literacy rate than the country as a whole, at 91.29%. The percentage of people under six is 15%.
