About Bongaigaon

Bongaigaon, a district in Assam, falls under Lower Assam Division and is bordered by Chirang district in the North, Barpeta District in the East, Goalpara District in the South, and Dhubri & Kokrajhar District in the West. The district encompasses a latitude and longitude range of 26°28′ North to 26°54′ North and 89° East to 90°96′ East, respectively.

Administration 

The Bongaigaon Town Committee was initially established in 1961 and was later upgraded to a Municipal Board in 1977. The present Municipal Area comprises 25 wards, covering an area of 14.31 square meters. Bongaigaon is part of the Barpeta Lok Sabha constituency, and Phani Bhusan Choudhury is the current Member of the Legislative Assembly (M.L.A.) representing the Bongaigaon constituency.

Geography

Bongaigaon is situated at coordinates 26°28’37” N and 90°33’30” E, with an average altitude of 62.6 meters. Located 200 km west of the State Capital, the town serves as a vital hub for communication in Assam and the wider northeast India region. The New Bongaigaon railway station is a major transportation link connecting Assam to the rest of the country. The town is well-connected by road through National Highways 31 B and 31C. Due to its strategic location and connectivity, Bongaigaon has become an important center for trade and commerce in Western Assam, serving a vast hinterland. It is one of the largest industrial towns in Lower Assam, situated within the Brahmaputra river’s basin.

Bongaigaon experiences a borderline monsoon-influenced humid subtropical climate, with temperatures marginally cooler than a tropical savanna climate. During the “cool” season from November to February, afternoons are warm to very warm, while mornings are cool. In the “hot” season in March and April, the weather becomes hot, and thunderstorm rainfalls become more frequent, heralding the onset of the monsoon season from June to September when heavy rainfall occurs every afternoon.
