About Chandigarh

As the shared capital of the states it borders Punjab to the north, west, and south, and Haryana to the east Chandigarh is a union territory and planned city in northern India. The majority of the Chandigarh Capital Region, commonly known as Greater Chandigarh, is made up of Chandigarh. It also includes the nearby satellite cities of Mohali in Punjab and Panchkula in Haryana. Situated 229 km (143 miles) southeast of Amritsar and 260 km (162 miles) north of New Delhi, it lies close to the foothills of the Himalayas. One of the first planned towns in post-independence India, Chandigarh is renowned throughout the world for its urban planning and architecture.

Etymology

Chandi and Garh are combined to form the name Chandigarh. Garh signifies stronghold, while Chandi is the name of the Hindu deity Chandi. The name comes from Chandi Mandir, an old temple in Panchkula District dedicated to the Hindu goddess Chandi, which is located close to the city.

 The “The City of Beauty” moniker or motif originated from the City Beautiful movement, a popular urban planning ideology in North America in the 1890s and 1900s. The original creator of Chandigarh, architect Albert Mayer, expressed regret about the United States’ disinterest in City lovely ideas and said, “We want to create a beautiful city…” The city presently uses this slogan to define itself; it was used as a logo in official publications in the 1970s.
