Historical Background:

Following India’s independence in 1947, Chittoor became a constituent of the former Madras State. The present-day Chittoor district was previously known as the North Arcot district, which was established by the British during the 19th century with Chittoor as its administrative center. This district was subsequently divided into two separate entities, Chittoor district and North Arcot district, on April 1, 1911.

Geography:

Chittoor city is situated along the banks of the Neeva River in the southernmost part of the state of Andhra Pradesh. It is strategically located on NH 69 and NH 40, connecting major metropolitan centers like Bangalore and Chennai.

Chittoor is bordered to the east by Tirupati district in Andhra Pradesh, to the south by Krishnagiri District, Vellore, Tiruvallur, and Thirupattur districts in Tamil Nadu, to the west by Kolar district in Karnataka, and to the north by Annamayya district in Andhra Pradesh. In terms of land area, it ranks eighth in the state, covering 15,150 square kilometers, which accounts for 5.51 percent of the total state area.

The mountainous region of the district generally has an elevation of 2500 feet above sea level. Chittoor Town is approximately 150 kilometers away from Chennai and 165 kilometers from Bangalore. The nearest city and twin city is Vellore, located just 30 kilometers across the border in Tamil Nadu.

Demographics:

The official and predominant language spoken in Chittoor is Telugu. As of the 2011 census, Chittoor has a population of 152,654, with a sex ratio of 1002 females per 1000 males, surpassing the state average of 992 females. The city boasts a literacy rate of 90.60%. In 2011, Chittoor was elevated to the status of a municipal corporation. Additionally, a significant minority of Tamil residents also call this city their home.
