About Dadra and Nagar Haveli

On August 2, 1954, the people of Dadra Nagar Haveli, which is landlocked between Gujarat in the north and Maharashtra in the south, freed themselves from Portuguese rule.On January 26, 2020, the union territory and the adjacent union territory of Daman and Diu united to become the new union territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu. After then, the Dadra and Nagar Haveli District was formed, one of the three districts that made up the new union territory.

History

Between 1783 and 1785, the Portuguese took control of Dadra and Nagar Haveli, ruling over them until their freedom in 1954. A few Sahukars (moneylenders) took advantage of the indigenous tribal population, the government and its officials were rapacious and corrupt, and there was complete disregard for the welfare of the populace.  On August 2, 1954, the Goan volunteers, working closely with the local populace, ended nearly 170 years of Portuguese domination.

Culture

With its undulating topography, the Dadra & Nagar Haveli is situated on the western edge of the Western Ghats foothills. It has a wooded appearance because forests cover 41.63% of the total land area. The main river Daman Ganga empties into the Arabian Sea near Daman after winding through the Dadra Nagar Haveli. 343709 people were living in the District as of the 2011 census. The Varlies, Kokana, Dhodia, and Dublas are the principal tribes. The indigenous people have a unique culture that includes vibrant folklore and strange rituals. In tribal culture, a wedding or harvest celebration is not complete without a folk dance.

Climate

All of the District’s heavily populated eastern regions have a typical marine climate of the north Indian Ocean due to their proximity to the coast. Summertime temperatures can exceed 42 °C at times, and they are hot and humid in the latter part. June marks the beginning of the monsoon season, which lasts until September. Winds from the southwest monsoon bring the rain. 200–250 cm of rain fall there each year. October marks the beginning of winter, which lasts until February. Wintertime temperatures vary from 14 °C to 30 °C.
