In 1998, the Bastar District was split up into the districts of Dantewada, Kanker, and Bastar. Dantewada was one of the sixteen districts of Madhya Pradesh that made up the new state of Chhattisgarh in 2000. When Dantewada was split in 2007, Bijapur district, Chhattisgarh, was created. It has four tehsils: Bijapur, Bhairamgarh, Usoor, and Bhopalpatnam. In 2012, it underwent additional bifurcation, giving rise to a new district called Sukma, including three tehsils: Chhindgarh, Sukma, and Konta.
