About Dhamtari

The Indian state of Chhattisgarh includes the district of Dhamtari. The coordinates of this district are 81°33′ E longitude and 20°42′ N latitude. On July 6, 1998, the district of Dhamtari was formally established by splitting the district of Raipur into three districts: Raipur, Dhamtari, and Mahasamund. Shri Rituraj Raghuvanshi is Dhamtari’s current collector. Shri Vijay Dewangan is the mayor of Dhamtari at the moment.

Geography

With a total size of 4084 km², the district sits 305 m above sea level. The district is bordered to the north by the districts of Raipur and Durg, to the east by the district Gariaband, to the south by the district Nabarangpur in Odisha, to the southwest by the district Kondagaon, and to the west by the districts Kanker and Balod.

The Mahanadi River, which has several names in this region, including Kankannadi, Chitrotpala, Neelotpala, Mandvahini, and Jairath, is the main river in this district. It rises in the Sihawa hills. Seonath, Pairy, Sondur, Joan, Kharun, and Shivnath are its tributaries. These rivers are responsible for the fertility of the plains in the Dhamtari district. Paddy is the main crop grown in this area.

Economy

Nearly 11 km from the district centre is the Ravishankar Sagar dam, which irrigates nearly 57,000 hectares of land and serves as the primary source of potable drinking water for Raipur, the state capital, as well as the Bhilai Steel Plant. The 10 MW hydroelectric power plant is coming up and should be finished very soon. At Madamsilli, the first Syphon dam in Asia was constructed in 1914. The two main projects are Sondur Dam and Dudhawa Dam in addition to Madamsilli.
