About Himachal Pradesh

Himachal Pradesh, nestled in the Western Himalayas of northern India, stands as a majestic state defined by lofty peaks and sprawling river networks. It’s the northernmost Indian state, bordered by Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Punjab, Haryana, Uttarakhand, and Uttar Pradesh. To the east, it meets the Tibet Autonomous Region in China. Known as “Snow-laden Mountain Province,” it’s recognized as Dev Bhoomi (Land of Gods) and Veer Bhoomi (Land of the Brave). This mountainous haven captivates with its extreme terrain, marking its place among India’s thirteen mountain states, boasting a landscape that echoes both serenity and valor.

History

Various tribes like Koli, Hali, Dagi, Dhaugri, Dasa, Khasa, Kanaura, and Kirata settled in Himachal Pradesh since ancient times. The region was home to the Indus Valley Civilization people around 2250-1750 BCE. Initially, the Kols and Mundas resided in the hills, succeeded by the Bhotas and Kiratas. These diverse tribal communities shaped the cultural and historical tapestry of present-day Himachal Pradesh, marking its rich heritage from prehistoric epochs to successive settlements.

Demography

As of the 2011 Census of India, Himachal Pradesh tallied a population of 6,864,602, comprising 3,481,873 males and 3,382,729 females, accounting for a mere 0.57% of India’s total populace. This marked a growth of 12.81%. Over a decade, the child sex ratio progressed from 896 in 2001 to 909 in 2011. Additionally, the total fertility rate (TFR) per woman as of 2015 stood at 1.7, placing it among the lowest in the country.

Geography

Himachal Pradesh nestles in the western Himalayas, spanning 30°22′N to 33°12′N latitude and 75°47′E to 79°04′E longitude across 55,673 square kilometers. Its rugged terrain is adorned by the Zanskar, great Himalayan, Dhauladhar, and Pir Panjal ranges. The majestic Reo Purgyil, towering at 6,816 meters, claims the title of the state’s highest peak. These mountain ranges define its landscape, with the outer Shiwalik range embracing its southern and western fringes. Amidst these ranges lie valleys that shape the heart of this mountainous haven, making Himachal Pradesh a breathtaking epitome of natural beauty.

Economy

Himachal Pradesh commenced its planning in 1951 alongside India, with the first five-year plan introducing an allocation of ₹52.7 million. Initially, over 50% was spent on transport and communication, while the power sector received a mere 4.6%, gradually rising to 7% by the Third Plan. Agriculture saw a rise from 14.4% to 32% by the Third Plan but declined thereafter, dropping to less than 10% by the Tenth Plan. Energy expenditure constituted 24.2% in the Tenth Plan outlay.
