About Jamui District

Jamui is one of the 38 districts in Bihar, India. It became a separate district on February 21, 1991, after being divided from Munger district.

History:

In the 19th century, the historian Buchanan visited Jamui in 1811 and discovered its historical significance. Other historians also believe that Jamui was well-known during the time of the Mahabharata.

Based on the information found in various sources, Jamui was under the rule of the Gupta and Pala dynasties before the 12th century. After that period, it became known for being ruled by the Chandel dynasty. Before the Chandel rule, the area was governed by Nigoria, who was defeated by the Chandels. The Chandel dynasty was established in the 13th century, and their kingdom covered the entire Jamui area. Currently, the district is part of the Red Corridor.

Geography:

The Jamui district covers an area of 3,098 square kilometers. It is rich in unexplored resources like mica, coal, gold, and iron ore. Located on the border of Bihar and Jharkhand, Jamui is scattered with hills. Within the Jhajha block of Jamui, on the main Delhi-Howrah railway line, is the small vacation spot of Simultala. Additionally, the town of Gidhaur, which is 17 kilometers away, was a significant place for kings during the British Raj, and many of its buildings from that era are still standing. A notable example of the architecture from this time is the Minto Tower in Gidhaur.

As per the 2011 census, Jamui district has a population of 1,760,405, ranking it 273rd in India out of 640 districts. The district’s population density is 567 people per square kilometer. In Jamui, there are 921 females for every 1,000 males, and the literacy rate is 62.16%. About 8.26% of its population lives in urban areas.

During the 2011 Census of India, 73.37% of the people in the district reported Hindi as their first language. Additionally, 6.81% spoke Urdu, 5.94% Khortha, 3.66% Santali, and 3.06% Magahi. Another 7.02% spoke languages classified as ‘Others’ under Hindi in the census.
