Jashpur District is a district that shares borders with Jharkhand and Odisha in the central Indian state of Chhattisgarh. The district’s administrative centre is located in Jashpur Nagar. History

One of the princely states of the Eastern States Agency, Jashpur State, had Jashpur Town as its capital during the British Raj. Vijay Bhushan Singh Ju Deo was the final monarch before India gained independence, having merged with it in 1948.

Geography

This district is approximately 150 km long and 85 km wide, measured north to south. 6,205 km² make up its whole area. It lies between latitudes 22° 17′ and 23° 15′ North and longitudes 83° 30′ and 84° 24′ East. There were 6701 km² of geographic region.

It is bordered to the north by the district of Balrampur, to the east by the district of Gumla in Jharkhand, to the southeast by the districts of Simdega in Jharkhand and Sundergarh in Odisha, to the southwest by the district of Raigarh, and to the west by the district of Surguja. Geographically, it is split into two sections. The Upper Ghat is the name for the hilly region in the north. Nichghat refers to the remaining, southern portion.

Economy

In Jashpur, agriculture provides the majority of the population’s income. The major pillars of the district’s economy are horticulture, animal husbandry, and rainfed agriculture. A variety of rice varieties, including fragrant rice, legumes, maize, Ramtil, and wheat are the main agricultural products. Over the past 20 years, horticulture has grown in popularity, and the district is now proudly established as Chhattisgarh’s hub for horticulture. The main fruit crops include strawberries, cashews, pears, mangos, and litchis. The district is quickly developing into the state’s vegetable centre. It yields an abundance of green vegetables, tomatoes, and chillies.

Demography

The population of the Jashpur district, as of the 2011 census, is 851,669, or about the same as that of the US state of South Dakota or the nation of Qatar. Based on this, it is ranked 473rd out of 640 in India. There are 146 people living in the district per square kilometre (380/sq mi). Between 2001 and 2011, the population growth rate was 14.65%. In Jashpur, there are 1004 females for every 1000 males and 68.6% of the population is literate. The percentage of people who reside in cities is 8.92%. The population is composed of 62.28% of Scheduled Tribes and 5.73% of Scheduled Castes.
