Kangra, nestled within the Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh, stands as both a vibrant city and a municipal council. Revered as Nagarkot, it bears cultural significance and historical charm. Its recognition extends beyond being a mere administrative center; it embodies the essence of the region’s rich heritage. Once called Kiraj and Trigarta, Kangra was established by the Katoch Kshatriya Rajputs of Chandervanshi Lineage. The Katoch Rajas ruled from a fortified town adorned with grand temples. Known as Bhimagar in ancient times, it’s said to have been founded by Raja Bhim, the younger brother of Kuru Emperor Yudhishthira. The revered Devi Vajreshwari temple, among the wealthiest in North India, met devastation during the 1905 Kangra earthquake, claiming 1339 lives here and 20,000 elsewhere. By 1855, the district headquarters shifted to the Dharmsala cantonment, established in 1849, after which the town’s significance evolved.
As per the 2001 India census, the demographic profile showcased a total of 1,924 households with an average size of 5.0 individuals per household. The population stood at 10,185, entirely urban, reflecting a 100% urban populace. There were no rural inhabitants. The sex ratio was 997, while the population in the 0-6 years bracket totaled 902 with a corresponding sex ratio of 797. The Scheduled Caste (SC) population was 660, boasting a sex ratio of 1050 and constituting 7.0% of the populace. Conversely, the Scheduled Tribe (ST) population was minimal at 10, with a sex ratio of 1500 and a 0% proportion. Literacy prevailed at 92.0%, accounting for 7,567 literates against 1,589 illiterates.
Kangra, nestled at 733 meters (2404 ft) above sea level, sprawls across the expanse from Jalandhar Doab deep into the Himalayan southern ranges. This town resides where the Baner River meets the Majhi River, boasting the significance of the Beas River in its midst.
