The Kanker district is situated in Chhattisgarh’s southern area. The Uttar Bastar Kanker District is situated between latitudes 20.6 and 20.24 and longitudes 80.48 and 81.48 in the southern part of the Indian state of Chhattisgarh. The district covers 6432 square kilometres in total size. 748,941 people live there. Kanker town, the district headquarters, is located on National Highway 30 approximately midway between Raipur, the state capital of Chhattisgarh, and Jagdalpur, the headquarters of the adjoining Bastar district.

History

Kanker’s history dates back to prehistoric times. There once was a lush forest area named Dandakaranya in the region of Kanker, according to the mythical Indian Sanskrit epics, the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. Kanker was also a land of sages and monks, so the legend goes. It is reported that this place was home to numerous Rishis (monks/sages), including Angira, Lomesh, Shringi, and Kank. Buddhism first made an impact on the area in the sixth century BC. Kanker’s long history documents the fact that it has always maintained its independence.

Geography

Kanker’s district headquarters is situated 160 kilometres away from Jagadalpur and 140 km away from Raipur. Bhanupratappur Railway Station became the district’s first railway station in 2018. Raipur is connected to Keoti and Bhanupratappur with daily DEMU services. The district’s minor patches of hills are crossed by the Mahanadi, Doodh, Hatkul, Sondur, and Turu rivers. Kanker’s physical terrain is varied, consisting of both gently rolling hills and level terrain. About 80% of Kanker’s land area is flat, with the majority of the land being between 300 and 600 metres above sea level.

Economy

People in the district mostly depend on agriculture. Despite the fact that a sizable portion of them are tribal, they are mostly supported by agriculture. Because there are still vast areas of forest on the land, non-timber forest produce represents another important source of revenue. In various regions, the tribes follow Dippa or Marham. Before the rainy season, the forest’s farmers harvest the trees and cultivate the ground. Every two years, they prepare a new farm and temporarily abandon the old one. Every year, the land is farmed on the aircraft.

The population of Kanker district, as of the 2011 census, is 748,941, or about the same as that of the US state of Alaska or the nation of Guyana. As a result, it is ranked 493rd in India. The population density of the district is 115 people per square kilometre, or 300 people per square mile. From 2001 to 2011, the population of the area increased at a rate of 15%. Kanker has a 70.97% literacy rate with a sex ratio of 1007 females for every 1000 males. The population that resides in cities is 10.25%. Scheduled Tribes account for 55.38% of the population, and Scheduled Castes for 4.21%.
