About Karimganj

One of the 23 districts that make up the Indian state of Assam is Karimganj district. The largest town in this district is Karimganj Town, which also serves as the administrative centre. It is bordered by the Bangladeshi Sylhet Division and Tripura and is situated in southern Assam. It, Hailakandi, and Cachar comprise the Barak Valley. Before India was divided, Karimganj was a part of the Sylhet District. In 1983, it became a district.

History

Karimganj is a place rich in history that dates back thousands of years. Its historical tapestry was enriched by the impact of multiple monarchs during its time as a component of the Kachari Kingdom. In 1778, Karimganj was first created as a 40 pargana section of the Sylhet district. Muhammad Karim Chowdhury, a Muslim mirashdar from Bengal, is credited with giving the area its name. He first opened a mart, Karimganj, less than four miles south of the Natikhal and Kushiyara River confluence. But in the autumn, the Natikhal would dry up, thus in the 1870s, the bazaar was moved to its current location in Karimganj.

Geography

The Karimganj district is roughly the size of Alaska’s Afognak Island, with 1,809 square kilometres (698 square miles). Its borders are as follows: Mizoram to the south, Tripura state to the southwest, Bangladesh to the west and northwest, and Cachar District to the east and south. The district’s principal town, Karimganj, and administrative headquarters are both called Karimganj. The town of Karimganj is situated by the Kushiyara River on the northern edge of the district that borders Bangladesh.

Economy

The town of Karimganj is a significant hub for trade and business in Northeast India. Its river port can handle heavy loads transported by steamers travelling through Bangladeshi rivers thanks to its complex infrastructure, which includes a freight terminal, jetty, warehouses, etc. Karimganj is a border commercial hub as well, with Sutarkandi Custom Station and the custom trade point at Dakbangla Ghat in the town handling import-export transactions valued at crores of rupees.
