About Kokrajhar

Located in the western region of Assam, Kokrajhar is a district renowned for its abundant natural beauty and diverse cultural heritage. It is an important hub for both culture and the economy in the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR). Located on the north bank of the Brahmaputra in Assam, Kokrajhar town serves as the headquarters of the Bodoland Territorial Council. It was established on February 10, 2003, and was composed of four districts: Kokrajhar, Chirang, Baska, and Udalguri.

History

Just before becoming its own district in 1983, Kokrajhar was a part of the Goalpara district, which was at that time undivided. The Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC), which was established to address the autonomy and development of the territory, was established as a result of socio-political processes that occurred in the district, particularly with regard to the aspirations of the Bodo community.

Geography

Kokrajhar District is bounded by Bhutan to the north and west and has a varied geography that includes both forested areas and fertile plains. Numerous indigenous populations reside in this area, including the most well-known ethnic group, the Bodos, as well as other tribes including the Santhals, Sarania Kacharis, and Adivasis.
