About Kurukshetra District

Kurukshetra, resonating as the “Dharmakshetra” or “Realm of duty,” stands as the city and administrative nucleus of Kurukshetra district in Haryana, India. Revered as the “Land of the Bhagavad Gita,” its essence transcends time. This sacred land echoes with ancient wisdom, echoing the verses of the Gita. The city’s cultural fabric intertwines history and spirituality, captivating visitors with its profound significance. Kurukshetra, steeped in mythological heritage, holds the essence of duty and righteousness. As the administrative heartland and a cultural gem, it stands tall, symbolizing an eternal saga of moral values entrenched in the very soul of India.

History

The Kuru Kingdom, established by King Puru, marked the genesis of the Kauravas and Pandavas in the Vedic Indo-Aryan era (c. 1200 – c. 900 BCE). Evolving into the Indian subcontinent’s inaugural state-level society, it codified Vedic hymns as the Vedas and pioneered the transformative Srauta rituals, integral to Hinduism’s roots. Flourishing as a cultural and political hub during the middle Vedic Period under rulers like Parikshit and Janamejaya, its prominence waned in the late Vedic era (c. 900 – c. 500 BCE), relegating it by the Mahajanapada period. The Kuru legacy persisted through post-Vedic times, laying the foundation for the legendary Mahabharata epic, coinciding geographically with the Painted Grey Ware culture.
