About Madhepura

Madhepura district is among the thirty-eight districts in Bihar, India, with its main office in Madhepura town. It also forms a part of the Kosi Division.

History:

Madhepura district belongs to the Kosi—Seemanchal subregion of Bihar’s Mithila region, where the local people primarily speak the Maithili language.

Madhepura, once part of the Maurya Empire, was largely under the control of the Yadav Zamindars of Murho Estate during the British Raj. It became an independent district on May 9, 1981, separating from Saharsa district. Earlier, since September 3, 1845, Madhepura was a subdivision of Bhagalpur district. On April 1, 1954, Saharsa district was formed, including Madhepura. The munsif court, established in Madhepura in 1865 and moved from Kishanganj, was joined by the Sub Judge Court in 1944.

Geography:

Madhepura district covers an area of 1,788 square kilometers. It is bordered by Araria and Supaul districts to the north, Khagaria and Bhagalpur districts to the south, Purnia district to the east, and Saharsa district to the west. Located in the northeastern part of Bihar, it lies in the plains of the River Koshi. The district is divided into two sub-divisions, Madhepura and Uda Kishunganj, and includes 13 blocks, 13 police stations, 170 panchayats, and 434 revenue villages.

Demographics:

Based on the 2011 census, Madhepura district has a population of 2,001,762. This ranks it 232nd out of 640 districts in India. Madhepura’s population density is of 1,116 people per square kilometer. There are 914 women for every 1,000 men in Madhepura, and the literacy rate is 53.78%. Also, 4.42% of the population lives in urban areas. During the 2011 Census, 38.43% of the people in the district spoke Maithili, 37.15% spoke Hindi, and 5.71% spoke Urdu as their first language.
