About Mahendragarh District

Mahendragarh, a district in Haryana, spans 1,899 km² with a populace of 922,088 (2021 census). Its 3 sub-divisions—Narnaul, Mahendragarh, and Kanina—contribute to its diverse landscape. Narnaul serves as the administrative hub and largest city, a distinctive feature as Mahendragarh town differs from the district name. Hosting the three major towns of Narnaul, Mahendragarh, and Kanina, it stands as a rarity in India. With its 2011 census positioning it as the third least populous district in Haryana, following Panchkula and Rewari, Mahendragarh embodies a unique blend of nomenclature and demographic distinction.

History

Kanod Fort, crafted by Maratha ruler Tatya Tope in 1755 CE, transformed into Mahendragarh under Patiala’s dominion during the British era. Renamed by Patiala’s Narendra Singh after his son Mahendra, the fort birthed Mahendragarh town. Malik Mahadud Khan, an aide to Babar, shaped habitation here. Post-1948’s PEPSU formation, Mahendragarh district emerged from Patiala, Dadri, and Bawal territories, headquartering in Narnaul. Tehsils evolved, with Bawal’s split and Rewari’s inclusion in 1956. Rewari and Bawal formed a new district in 1989, distancing from Mahendragarh. Presently, Mahendragarh stands with three sub-divisions, five tehsils, and one sub-tehsil, a testament to its evolving historical tapestry.

Demography

As per the 2011 census, Mahendragarh district housed 922,088 people, ranking 462nd in India. With a population density of 485 per sq km, it saw a growth of 13.43% from 2001-2011. The sex ratio stood at 895 females per 1000 males, boasting a literacy rate of 77.72%. Scheduled Castes comprised 16.95% of the populace. Predominant languages included Hindi (56.80%), Haryanvi (40.37%), and Rajasthani (2.18%). Ahirwati serves as the local dialect. Haryanvi or Hindi were cited as the primary languages by the majority in the 2011 Census, reflecting Mahendragarh’s linguistic diversity and cultural richness.

Geography

The district spans from north latitude 27°47’ to 28°26’ and east longitude 75°56’ to 76°51’. Embraced by Bhiwani, Charki Dadri, Jhajjar, and Rewari districts to the north, it adjoins Rewari and Alwar districts to the east, intertwining with Alwar, Jaipur, and Sikar districts to the south. To the west, it shares borders with Sikar and Jhunjhunu districts of Rajasthan. This district’s geographical expanse defines its boundaries, creating a cultural and administrative nexus, blending influences from neighboring regions while retaining its unique identity amidst the diverse landscapes and heritage of the area.

Economy

In 2006, the Ministry of Panchayati Raj identified Mahendergarh among India’s 250 most underprivileged districts out of 640. As part of Haryana, it presently benefits from the Backward Regions Grant Fund Programme (BRGF), receiving crucial financial support. This district, along with another in Haryana, is prioritized under BRGF, aiming to uplift and address socio-economic challenges.
