Maharashtra is a state in India, and its capital is Mumbai. With an estimated 12.5 million people living in the city proper, Mumbai is both India’s largest populous metropolis and de facto financial centre (1.25 crore). With a population of over 23 million (2.3 crore), Mumbai is the hub of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, which is the sixth most populated metropolitan area in the world. Geography

Mumbai is situated on a small peninsula southwest of Salsette Island, which is bordered to the west by the Arabian Sea, to the east by Thane Creek, and to the north by Vasai Creek. The majority of the island is made up of Mumbai’s suburban area. Thane Creek is to the east of Navi Mumbai, and Vasai Creek is to the north of Thane.

Mumbai is made up of two distinct areas that make up the two independent revenue districts of Maharashtra: Mumbai City district and Mumbai Suburban district. The Island City and South Mumbai are other popular names for the city district area. Mumbai is 603.4 km sq (233 sq mi) in total.

Climate

Although the central and northern suburbs of Mumbai experience a tropical monsoon climate (Am) with even higher wet season rainfall, the city itself has an extreme tropical wet and dry climate. Mumbai experiences two distinct seasons: a nearly dry spell from October to May, followed by a very wet spell that peaks in July. December through February is a colder season, whereas March through May is a hotter one. The south west monsoon season runs from June to roughly the end of September; the post-monsoon season spans October and November.

Economy

Mumbai, the largest city in India in terms of population, is also the nation’s financial and commercial hub, accounting for 6.16% of GDP. Mumbai functions as a major economic centre for India; in 2006, it accounted for 10% of factory employment, 25% of industrial output, 33% of income tax collections, 60% of customs duty collections, 20% of central excise tax collections, 40% of foreign trade, and ₹40 billion in corporate taxes (which translates to ₹130 billion or US$1.6 billion in 2023)

Demography

The population of Mumbai city was 12,479,608 as of the 2011 census. The estimated population density is 20,482 people per square kilometre. Each person has 4.5 square metres of living space. In 2011, the population of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region was 20,748,395 people. The MCGM-administered region of Greater Mumbai has a higher literacy rate—94.7%—than the 86.7% national average. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region’s projected slum population has increased from 60 lakh (6 million) in 2001 to 90 lakh (9 million), or roughly 38.5% of the total population.
