About Munger District

Munger, previously known as Monghyr, forms a twin city and serves as a Municipal Corporation in Bihar, India. It acts as the administrative center for both Munger district and Munger Division.

History:

Historically, Munger was a key city in Eastern India and undivided Bengal during the Mughal era and British rule. It stands as a major hub for politics, culture, education, and commerce in Bihar and Eastern India.

Munger, believed to be established by the Guptas in the 4th century CE, features a fort. This fort is notable for housing the tomb of Shah Mushk Nafā, a Muslim saint who passed away in 1497. Later, in 1763, Mir Qasim, the Nawab of Bengal, chose Munger as his capital. He constructed an arsenal and various palaces during his reign. Eventually, in 1864, Munger was officially recognized as a municipality.

Geography:

Geographically, Munger is located about 180km east of Bihar’s capital, Patna. It lies approximately 480km west of Kolkata, the largest city in Eastern India, and is around 1200km away from New Delhi, the national capital.

 The twin city, including Munger and Jamalpur, sits on the southern side of the Ganges River. It is located 08 km from Jamalpur Junction. Munger is positioned 180 km to the east of Patna, the capital of Bihar. It also lies 430 km away from Kolkata, which is the capital of West Bengal.
