About Nellore
Situated on the banks of the Penna River in the Nellore district of the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, Nellore serves as the district’s headquarters, Nellore mandal, and Nellore revenue division. It ranks as the fourth most populous city in the state. Nellore is situated approximately 279 kilometers away from Vijayawada, about 170 kilometers north of Chennai in Tamil Nadu, and roughly 380 kilometers east-northeast of Bangalore, Karnataka.
History:
Nellore has a rich historical lineage with various dynasties and empires ruling over it through different periods. In the 3rd century BCE, it was under the dominion of Ashoka of the Mauryan dynasty. Subsequently, the Pallava dynasty assumed control and ruled Nellore until the 6th century CE, after which it came under the governance of the Chola rulers for an extended period. The Cholas continued their rule until the 13th century CE when they witnessed a decline in power. Following this, Nellore became a part of several other significant regimes including the Kakatiyas, Vijayanagara Empire, Sultanate of Golconda, Mughal Empire, and Arcot Nawabdom.
During the 18th century, the British took control of Nellore from the Arcot Nawabs, thereby integrating it into the Madras Presidency of British India. The initial account of this transition was documented by John Boswell in 1873 during his tenure as collector. This comprehensive report by the British encompassed various aspects, including climate, agriculture, health statistics, and crucial taxation data.
Recognizing Nellore’s significance in agriculture and its pivotal role as the port of Krishnapatam, the British acknowledged its importance. Furthermore, the city played a vital role in the development of the Telugu language and the formation of the state of Andhra Pradesh.

According to the 2011 census data, Nellore city recorded a population of 505,258. Notably, the average literacy rate in the city is 83.59%, with a breakdown of 87.53% for males and 79.52% for females. This figure is considerably higher than the state average of 73.00%.
