About Papum Pare

Papum Pare district was established in 1992, separating from the Lower Subansiri District, with its headquarters in Yupia, as per Government Notification No. GA(B)36/89 dated 21st September, 1992. Initially, the district’s temporary headquarters was in Itanagar from 1992 to 2000. In 2000, after the construction of office buildings and residential accommodations, the district’s headquarters was permanently relocated to Yupia.

Geography

Papum Pare District is situated in the northeastern part of Arunachal Pradesh, with its headquarters located in Yupia, approximately 22 km from Itanagar. The district’s name is derived from two major rivers, Papum and Pare. Covering an area of approximately 3,462 sq km, the land is predominantly mountainous with the presence of the Himalayan ranges. The hill ranges vary in elevation from 45 to 1,200 meters above sea level, showcasing lush green forests, deep river valleys, and picturesque plateaus.

Climate

The district’s climate is greatly influenced by its diverse terrain, varying with the natural divisions and elevations. The entire district is characterized by mountainous terrain, intersected by valleys and ravines through which numerous streams and rivers flow. The elevation along the southern periphery of the district is as low as 200 meters or less. The winter season spans from December to February, followed by the pre-monsoon season marked by thunderstorms until May. The southwest monsoon begins in June and continues until September.

Agriculture

Agriculture and horticulture are the primary sources of income in Papum Pare district, although many residents are engaged in small businesses. The people practice subsistence agriculture, utilizing jhum (shifting) cultivation on steep slopes and wet rice cultivation in low-lying areas. Horticulture is also widely practiced throughout the district, yielding various products such as oranges, pineapples, bananas, guavas, jackfruits, papayas, lemons, lychees, plums, peaches, large cardamom, and pears. Additionally, domestic animals are raised for consumption.
