About Porbandar

Porbandar, a city in Gujarat, is famous as the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi and Sudama. It’s the administrative center of Porbandar District and used to be the capital of the Porbandar princely state.

Porbandar has a lovely beach called ‘Chowpati’ with a sandy shore along the ocean. They’ve improved it over the years with seating, a skating rink, and it’s used for festivals like ‘Janamastmi Fair.’ There are also places to stay nearby.

Fishing is a significant source of jobs here, and Porbandar is one of the few places where the endangered dugong can still be found. Efforts are being made to protect this marine mammal.

History:

Explorations in and around Porbandar revealed the remains of an ancient settlement from around 16th-14th centuries BCE, known as the Late Harappan period. This area was active in maritime activities during that time, as shown by the discovery of old jetties along Porbandar creek.

Porbandar is also considered the birthplace of Sudama, a friend of Krishna, in Indian theology, and is sometimes called Sudaamapuri or Sudamapuri.

In more recent history, Porbandar was the center of a princely state during British India, ruled by the Jethwa clan of Rajputs since the 16th century. It was initially under Mughal control, later taken over by the Marathas, and eventually came under the authority of the Gaekwad court at Baroda and the Peshwa.

Porbandar, like other states in Kathiawar, began to have British influence in 1807. The British provided security in exchange for an annual payment to the Peshwa and the Gaekwad. In 1817, the Peshwa gave up his share to the British, and in 1820, the Gaekwad allowed the British to collect tributes in Kathiawar.

During the British Raj, the state covered an area of 1,663 square kilometers with many villages and a population of over 100,000 in 1921. Its revenue was Rs. 21,00,000/-. By 1947, the rulers were known as “Highness” and held the title of “Maharaj Rana Sahib.” They were entitled to a salute of 13 guns.

After India gained independence in 1947, Porbandar was merged into the ‘United State of Kathiawar’ and later became part of Gujarat. The last king of Porbandar was Natwarsinhji Bhavsinhji Maharaj.
