About Prakasam
Prakasam district is one of the twelve districts in the coastal Andhra region of Andhra Pradesh. It was created in 1970 and recently underwent reorganization on April 4, 2022. The district’s main center is Ongole, situated on the western coastline of the Bay of Bengal. It shares its borders with Bapatla and Palnadu districts to the north, Nandyal district to the west, and Kadapa and Nellore districts to the south. Additionally, a portion of its northwestern area also connects with Nagarkurnool district in Telangana.
History:
Prakasam district came into existence on February 2, 1970. It was created by taking parts from Guntur, Nellore, and Kurnool districts of Andhra Pradesh. Specifically, it was formed by combining three taluks from Guntur district (Addanki, Chirala, and Ongole), four taluks from Nellore district (Kandukur, Kanigiri, Darsi, and Podili), and three taluks from Kurnool district (Markapur, Yarragondapalem, and Giddaluru). This district is one of the nine districts located in the Coastal Andhra region of undivided Andhra Pradesh.
Geography:
Prakasam district covers an area of 14,322 square kilometers. It is surrounded by different areas: it touches the Nagarkurnool district in Telangana to the north, SPSR Nellore district to the south, Nandyal district to the west, Palnadu and Bapatla districts to the east, and the Bay of Bengal to the southeast.
This district has about 50 kilometers of coastline. There are popular beaches like Kothapatnam in Kothapatnam Mandal and Pakala in Singarayakonda Mandal. When it comes to rivers, there are some big ones like Gundlakamma, Musi, and Paleru. Smaller rivers such as Thammileru, Sagileru, Gudisileru, and streams like Ogeru vagu, Nallavagu, and Vedimangala vagu also flow here. The Gundlakumma river, in particular, stretches for 220 kilometers within the district. Additionally, there are several reservoirs and tanks like Thippayapalem Reservoir, Duvvaleru Project, Cumbum tank, and Bhavanasi tanks that have been constructed along this river.
Demographics:
According to the 2011 census of India, the total population of the entire district was 3,397,448 people. That means there were about 193 individuals living in each square kilometer of the area. Among them, there were 17,14,764 males and 16,82,684 females, which is a ratio of 981 females for every 1000 males. In terms of urban living, 664,582 people lived in cities, making up about 19.56% of the total population.
Additionally, there were 19,04,435 individuals who were literate, and the literacy rate was 63.08%. When it comes to languages, during the 2011 census, 93.88% of the population spoke Telugu, while 5.05% spoke Urdu as their primary language in the undivided district.
