Saharsa is a city and municipal corporation in eastern Bihar, India, serving as the administrative hub for both Saharsa District and the Kosi Division. Located near the eastern banks of the Kosi River, its local language is Maithili, with Hindi also widely spoken and understood.

History:

Saharsa is a part of the Mithila region, which became significant after Indo-Aryan tribes settled there and formed the Mithila Kingdom, also known as the Kingdom of the Videhas. Around 1100–500 BCE, during the late Vedic period, Videhas emerged as a key political and cultural center in South Asia, alongside Kuru and Pañcāla. The rulers of this kingdom were known as Janakas. Later on, the Videha Kingdom became a part of the Vajjika League, with its capital in Vaishali, another city in the Mithila region.

Geography:

Saharsa, known for its high-quality Corn and Makhana production, exports significant quantities annually and grows various crops including rice, mangoes, and sugarcane. Located at 41 meters elevation on the Kosi river basin’s flat alluvial plain, the area is prone to soil erosion due to the Kosi River’s changing course and frequent flooding. This flooding, particularly from the Koshi River, affects about 21,000 km² of land, impacting the rural economy and earning the river the name “Sorrow of Bihar”. Additionally, the Bagmati River often changes its course, and the Gandak River flows in the district’s south.

Demographics:

In 2011, Saharsa had a population of 1,897,102, with 995,502 men and 901,600 women. The national sex ratio in India, according to the 2011 Census, is 940. The average literacy rate in Saharsa was 54.57%, with male literacy at 65.22% and female literacy at 42.73%. Out of the total population, 829,206 people were literate, including 521,560 men and 307,646 women.
