About Sheikhpura District

Sheikhpura is a town in Bihar. It’s also the main administrative center for the Sheikhpura district. The Sheikhpura district has produced several prominent leaders for the country, including Shri Krishna Singh, the first Chief Minister of Bihar, Sukhdev Prasad Singh, and Rajo Singh, who was a Member of Parliament.

History:

Around 600 years ago, the Sufi saint Hazarat Makhdum Shah Shoeb Rahamatullah Aleh founded Sheikhpura, clearing forests and attracting settlers. It was a key administrative center during the Pallava dynasty, and later, Sher Shah Suri built the famous ‘Dal Kuan’ there. In the Mughal period, Sheikhpura became a Thana, then a major police area under British rule, and a Block after India’s independence. It was upgraded to a Subdivision on April 14, 1983, and became a District on July 31, 1994.

Geography:

Sheikhpura district, covering 689 square kilometers, is located in Bihar’s southern part. It’s bordered by Nalanda, Patna, Nawada, Jamui, and Lakhisarai, with its headquarters north of the Gaya-Kuel railway. The S.K.R College Barbigha Stadium is notable for district athletes. The district, spanning 77,705 hectares, features a hilly center and fertile surrounding lands, sloping towards the northeast. The northeast’s low-lying areas often become waterlogged in the rainy season, known as the Tal area. While there are no large rivers, small ones like the Somi, Korihari, Tati, Kachchi, and Rijown flow seasonally.

Based on the 2011 census, the Sheikhpura district has 1,11,089 people living in it. This number places it at 516th among India’s 640 districts. The area has 922 people per square kilometre. In Sheikhpura, there are 926 women for every 1000 men. The literacy rate is 65.96%.
