About Shimla District
History
Shimla, once a dense forest with sparse civilization, housed the Jakhu Temple and a few dwellings. Named after the Hindu goddess Shyamala Devi, it fell to Bhimsen Thapa of Nepal in 1806. Post the Anglo-Nepalese War, the British East India Company claimed it per the Sugauli Treaty. David Ochterlony seized Malaun fort in 1815, quelling Gurkha leaders. Described as a moderate-sized village in 1817, it housed a fakir offering water to travelers. Lieutenant Ross established a wooden cottage there in 1819 as the Assistant Political Agent in the Hill States. This marked the transformation of Shimla from a modest village to a burgeoning settlement.
