The area’s vibrant atmosphere attracts young tourists with its hip hostels and cafes.
History:
South Delhi is a large part of Delhi with many significant historical locations. Among the eleven ‘historical cities’ of Delhi, three are located in South Delhi: Qila Rai Pithora (1st), Mehrauli (2nd), and Siri, including Hauz Khas (3rd).
Some of South Delhi’s most picturesque heritage sites include Jahaz Mahal, Zafar Mahal, Hauz Khas Complex, Bijay Mandal, Qutub Minar, Mehrauli Archaeological Park, and Safdarjung’s Tomb. These places hold historical and cultural importance in the region.
Geography:
As of 2009, the administrative district had a 20% Green Cover. It features numerous large green parks, a wildlife sanctuary, biodiversity parks, and green belts. Some examples include Deer Park and Rose Garden in Hauz Khas and the Asola Wildlife Sanctuary near Delhi’s southern border, nestled in the Aravallis foothills. South Delhi strikes a balance between urban development and green spaces, offering a mix of concrete structures and lush greenery.
Demographics:
As per the 2011 census, South Delhi had a population of 2,731,929, which ranked it 144th among all districts in India. The district was densely populated, with about 10,935 people living in every square kilometer.
Administration:
While the district divisions have administrative significance, in everyday life, people often refer to South Delhi as extending from Delhi’s IGI Airport in the New Delhi district to the Yamuna River in the South East, a region that overlaps with administrative South West Delhi district.
