Surat is a district in Gujarat, India, with its main city, Surat, serving as the administrative center. It is bordered by the districts of Bharuch and Narmada to the north, Navsari to the south, Tapi to the east, and the Gulf of Cambay to the west. Known as one of Gujarat’s most developed districts, it had a population of 6,081,322, with 79.68% living in urban areas as of 2011. On October 2, 2007, the district was divided to form a new Tapi district. As of 2011, Surat is India’s 12th most populous district and Gujarat’s second, after Ahmedabad.
Geography:
Surat District covers an area of 4,418 km² and had a population density of 1,376 people per km² in 2011, making it the most densely populated region in Gujarat, followed by Ahmedabad. The district includes 10 sub-districts: Surat city, Mandvi, Bardoli, Palsana, Mahuva, Kamrej, Mangrol, Choryasi, Olpad, and Umarpada.
Surat has faced significant flooding since the 20th century, with 14 major floods recorded. Major floods occurred in 1968 and 1994, the latter leading to a nationwide plague outbreak with Surat at its center. In 1998, 30% of the city was underwater due to the Tapti river’s flooding, and in August 2006, over 95% of Surat was flooded, resulting in over 120 deaths, stranding many without food or electricity, and causing prolonged closures of businesses and schools.

As per the 2011 census, Surat district’s population is 6,081,322, making it the 12th largest in India out of 640 districts. It has a population density of 1,376 people per square kilometer. The sex ratio in Surat is 788 females to every 1000 males, and the literacy rate is 86.5%. A majority, 79.74%, of the population resides in urban areas.
