About Vizianagaram

Vizianagaram, also known as Vijayanagaram, is a megacity in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. It’s also the main center for the Vizianagaram quarter. This megacity is positioned in the Eastern Ghats, about 24 kilometers to the west of the Bay of Bengal and 40 kilometers north- northeast of Visakhapatnam. Vizianagaram has a population of 228,025 people and it was made the capital of the Vizianagaram estate by Raja Vijayaram Raj from the Pusapati dynasty. These autocrats played an important part in the region’s history during the 18th century and were known for supporting education and the trades.

History:

The Vizianagaram Princely State was governed by kings from the Pusapati family and Gajapati Maharajas. One of the famous kings was Maharaja Vijayarama Gajapati Raju. The Pusapatis are descendants of Lord Shri Rama and belong to the Suryavanshi Kshatriya lineage. Their ancestors were the Maharanas of Udaipur.

Demographics:

In the 2011 Census of India, the town had a population of 227,533 people. Out of these, there were 111,596 males and 115,937 females, which means there were more females than males, with 1,039 females for every 1,000 males. Among them, there were 20,487 children aged 0–6 years, including 10,495 boys and 9,992 girls.
The town also had a high literacy rate of 81.85%, with 169,461 literate individuals. This literacy rate was much higher than the national average of 73.00%. The official language spoken here is Telugu.
