About West Champaran District

West Champaran is a district in Bihar, India, situated just 60 km west of Birgunj. It holds the distinction of being the largest district in Bihar, covering an extensive area of 5,228 km². This district is a part of the Tirhut Division, and its administrative center is in Bettiah. Notably, West Champaran shares an open border with Nepal. Kumar Bagh and Bhitiharwa are significant locations within West Champaran, with the latter being associated with Mahatma Gandhi’s initiation of the Satyagrah Aandolan. Moreover, West Champaran stands as Bihar’s leading sugarcane-producing district in 2022.

Administration in West Champaran district is divided into three Sub-Divisions: Bettiah, Bagaha, and Narkatiaganj. There are several Blocks in the district including Bettiah, Sikta, Mainatand, Chanpattia, Bairia, Lauria, Bagaha – 1, Bagaha – 2, Madhubani, Gaunaha, Narkatiaganj, Manjhaulia, Nautan, Jogapatti, Ramnagar, Thakraha, Bhitaha, and Piprasi. The district has good road and railway connections to major cities.

Demographics:

According to the 2011 census, West Champaran district has a population of 3,935,042, ranking 63rd in India out of 640 districts. The district has a population density of 750 people per square kilometer. The sex ratio in Pashchim Champaran is 906 females for every 1000 males, and the literacy rate is 58.06%. About 9.99% of the population lives in urban areas.

At the time of the 2011 Census of India, 91.86% of the population in the district spoke Bhojpuri, 3.32% Hindi, and 2.97% Urdu as their first language. The languages spoken include Bhojpuri, which is part of the Bihari language group and has nearly 51,000,000 speakers.
