About Malkangiri
Malkangiri, a town and municipality in the Malkangiri district of the Indian state of Odisha, was once known as “Malikamardhangiri.” It serves as the Malkangiri district’s administrative center. The East Pakistani refugees, who were rehabilitated since 1965 under the Dandakaranya Project, have relocated to Malkangiri. In Malkangiri town, some Sri Lankan Tamil refugees were also rehabilitated after the LTTE’s military conflict in the early 1990s. Part of the Red Corridor, it is currently one of the state’s most naxalite-affected locations.
History
According to local belief, Valmiki penned the Ramayana along the Tamasa river. The area was referred to in the Ramayana as Malyavantagiri, and it was thought that Sitakunda, which is close to Mudulipada, was where Sita took her bath. According to local mythology, the Pandavas were banished for a year and lived in the deep forests of Malkangiri. These three well-known local deities Kanamraju, Balaraju, and Poturaju are revered by the populace. The district celebrates the festival of these Lords, Badayatra, on the alternate year.

Politics
Following the 2019 elections, Bharatiya Janata Party’s Shri Aditya Madhi is the current MLA for the Malkangiri Assembly (ST) Constituency. Manas Kumar Madkami of the BJD was the previous MLA for the Malkangiri Assembly (ST) Constituency. He was elected in 2014. Arabinda Dhali of the BJP won this seat in 2000 and 1995; Naka Kanaya won it for the JD in 1990 and the JNP in 1977; Nadiabasi Biswas of the INC won it in 1985; and Naka Laxmaya of the INC(I) won it in 1980.
