Moga district, situated in the vibrant state of Punjab, India, holds a significant place as the 17th district of Punjab State, officially established on 24th November 1995 when it was carved out of the Faridkot district. Renowned for its substantial wheat and rice production, Moga District contributes significantly to Punjab’s agricultural prowess. The people of Moga City and its district are steeped in the rich Malwa culture. Moreover, Moga holds the distinction of being the ancestral homeland for a substantial portion of Indian Punjabi expatriates and their descendants, earning it the affectionate moniker of the “NRI district.”

History

Discovering historical structures and sites predating the Mughal emperor Akbar’s reign is a formidable challenge in Moga due to the ever-shifting course of the Sutlej river over centuries. Consequently, the region has yielded scant evidence of ancient sites. This phenomenon is particularly pronounced in the western reaches of the district. The constant river alterations have obscured traces of antiquity, leaving few historical remnants to shed light on the distant past within the local confines of Moga. Unearthing pre-Mughal heritage in this area remains a complex endeavor, underscoring the significance of preserving and documenting what little history remains.

Demography

As per the 2011 census, Moga district boasts a population of 995,746, akin to Fiji or Montana. This positions it at 447th among Indian districts, with a population density of 444 per square kilometer. Over the 2001-2011 decade, Moga witnessed a population growth rate of 10.9%. The district exhibits a sex ratio of 893 females per 1000 males and a literacy rate of 71.6%. Notably, Scheduled Castes constitute 36.50% of the population in Moga.

Geography

Situated within the heart of the state, Moga occupies a central position in Punjab, encompassing a flat terrain covering 2,230 square kilometers, equivalent to 4.42 percent of the total land area of Punjab. It spans across the geographical coordinates of 75 degrees 15′ E to 75 degrees 25′ E longitude and 30 degrees 35′ N to 31 degrees 15′ N latitude. This strategic location places Moga at the crossroads of Punjab’s geographic coordinates, offering a vital hub for trade, commerce, and cultural exchange within the region.
