Mokokchung stands as an early bastion in the Naga Hills where the Assam Rifles, under British leadership, erected their outposts (known as stockades) in the late 19th century. The town’s roots trace back to this post nestled in the DC Hill, marking the epicenter of its initial expansion. Over time, British governance sprawled eastward, encompassing the farthest reaches of the Naga Hills. This gradual extension of authority towards the remote regions signified an era of territorial evolution, shaping Mokokchung’s historical narrative and its integral role within the broader context of the Naga Hills’ development under colonial rule.

In 2001, Mokokchung Municipal Council (excluding colonies beyond Sungkomen Ward) held 31,204 people; presently, it stands at 41,746 (inclusive of Yimyu ward post its 2003 integration). The broader metropolitan area houses 60,161 individuals. Men account for 55%, women 45%. Remarkably, Mokokchung boasts Nagaland‘s highest literacy rate at 84%, surpassing the national average of 59.5%. Male literacy matches the average, while female literacy slightly trails at 83%. 11% are under 6 years old. Predominantly inhabited by the Ao community, Mokokchung pulsates with Ao history and cultural traditions, serving as the vibrant heart and cultural epicenter of the Aos.

Situated at coordinates 26.33°N 94.53°E, Mokokchung stands elevated at 1325 meters above sea level. Embraced by a mild climate year-round, the town enjoys a temperate environment.
