Following independence in 1947, Tuensang emerged as an autonomous administrative hub. By 1952, it evolved into a sub-division within the North-East Frontier Agency (NEFA), governed by a distinct Assistant Political Officer. Subsequently, in 1957, Tuensang’s subdivision diverged from NEFA and merged into the Naga Hills-Tuensang Area, alongside Kohima, Mokokchung, and Tuensang districts. In 1973, Mon District emerged, delineated from the former Tuensang District, deriving its name from the district headquarters. Prior to 1971, the present Mon District functioned as a subdivision within the Tuensang District, marking a significant evolution in its administrative identity and territorial delineation.
