Nabarangpur district, which is a district in Odisha, India, is sometimes referred to as Nabarangapur district or Nawarangpur district. The district capital is the city of Nabarangpur. The area is highly forested, and the majority of the population is tribal. It borders the districts of Koraput and Kalahandi. The Nabarangpur district has an average elevation of 572 meters (1,877 feet) and is located at 19.14 latitude and 82.32 longitude.

Geography

The district is primarily a relatively flat plateau covered in forests, with the highest concentrations of forest in the north and east. There are a few low hills in the west that climb to a height of 1000 meters. The Indravati River plains in the south provide a large portion of the border with the Koraput district, while the Eastern Ghats constitute the easternmost frontier around Rayagada. Around Chandahandi, in the northeast, lies a tract known as Panabeda Mutta, which is about 150 meters above sea level.

History

The area’s early history is not very extensive. Although Kalinga ruled the area, it was thought that the Mauryas had considerable influence over it. During his conquests, Kharavela, the leader of the Kalinga resurgence, referred to the region as Vidyadhara and employed troops specifically for it. The Satavahanas, Ikshavakus, and Vakatakas were the successive rulers of Nabarangpur in the second and third centuries. But by the time Samudragupta made an expedition to the area in 350 CE, no significant power was in control of the district.

Economy

One of the 250 poorest districts in the nation, Nabarangpur was identified by the Ministry of Panchayati Raj in 2006. It’s one of the 19 districts in Odisha that the Backward Regions Grant Fund Program (BRGF) is currently funding. 40% of the district’s land is used for agricultural, supporting the bulk of the people. The region has seen the establishment of some industries in recent years.

Culture

Nabarangpur’s tribal culture is well-known. The Gonds and Bhottadas are two of the bigger tribes. Though they all understand and speak Odia, each of these tribes has its own language, traditions, and traditional dances. The Bhottadas’ Cherechera is one of the more well-known dances. Though strongly impacted by Hindu traditions, the indigenous people in the district continue to practice their ancient religion. Mahua use, totemistic clans, and comparable habitation patterns are among the commonalities among the tribes.

Demography

Nabarangpur district is ranked 390th in terms of population, with 1,220,946 people living there as per the 2011 Indian Census. There are 230 people living in the district per square kilometer (600/sq mi). Between 2001 and 2011, the population growth rate was 18.81%. In Nabarangapur, there are 1018 females for every 1000 males and 48.2% of the population is literate. The percentage of people who reside in cities is 7.18%. The percentages of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes in the population are 14.53% and 55.79%, respectively.
